Discover Our Roots

Nestled in the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Forsyth Township offers a rich tapestry of history—one that tells the story of Cold War guardians and mining pioneers. If you’re a history buff, or just love stepping back in time, our two local museums are must-see stops during your Upper Peninsula adventure.

K.I. Sawyer Heritage Museum
Located in the former Recreation Center on the old K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base, the K.I. Sawyer Heritage Museum chronicles the life and legacy of one of America’s most critical Cold War installations. Walk the same halls once frequented by the “Guardians of the North,” and learn how these men and women defended our skies during the tense era of U.S.–Soviet relations. Exhibits feature Cold War relics, flight gear, personal stories, and even static aircraft displays nearby—perfect for families, veterans, and aviation fans alike.

Gwinn Historical Museum

In downtown Gwinn, the Gwinn Historical Museum tells a different story—one of iron ore, innovation, and community. Originally built as a company town at the turn of the 20th century, Gwinn was designed with progressive amenities that were rare in rural America. It now holds a place on the National Register of Historic Places, and the museum celebrates its legacy with exhibits on early mining life, vintage photographs, and artifacts from Gwinn’s early days.

Whether you’re tracing family roots, exploring Cold War history, or just looking for a unique cultural experience in a quiet, forested town, Forsyth Township’s museums invite you to explore our past.
