SKIING TIPS

Dress in Layers Upper Michigan winters are unpredictable. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers (like fleece or wool), and a waterproof outer shell. This allows you to adjust as the temperature changes.

Protect Against Wind and Lake Effect Snow The U.P. can be windy, especially near Lake Superior. Bring a good neck gaiter, face mask, and goggles to protect your skin and eyes from blowing snow.

Choose the Right Ski Area
For downhill, check out family-friendly slopes like Marquette Mountain. For cross-country, explore Blueberry Ridge or Anderson Lake in Forsyth Township.

Be Ready for Changing Conditions
Lake-effect snow can make trails powdery one minute and icy the next. Keep your skis waxed appropriately and check local trail or slope reports before heading out.

Stay Hydrated and Fueled
Cold weather often tricks people into forgetting hydration. Carry water and snacks—nuts, jerky, or energy bars—to keep your energy up during long days outdoors.

Learn the Local Trail Etiquette
On cross-country trails, stay to the right, announce when passing, and avoid walking in the groomed tracks. On downhill slopes, yield to skiers below you and respect posted signs.

Don’t Underestimate Early Sunsets
Daylight is shorter in winter up here. Plan your outings with enough time to get back safely before dark or bring a headlamp if you’ll be out in the late afternoon.

Watch for Wildlife
It’s not uncommon to spot deer, fox, or even bald eagles while skiing cross-country. Keep your distance and enjoy the wild backdrop that makes skiing in the U.P. so special.

Warm Up and Cool Down
Do some light stretching or easy glides before hitting the slopes or trails. Afterward, stretch again to prevent stiffness, especially if you’re planning multiple ski days.

Après-Ski in U.P. Style
Part of the fun is warming up afterward. Local spots near Gwinn and Marquette offer cozy restaurants and pubs to refuel, often with live music or U.P. specialties.
