HIKING TIPS

Dress in Layers
Weather in the U.P. can change quickly. Mornings may start cool, afternoons can get warm, and evenings drop back into sweater weather. Lightweight, moisture-wicking layers are your best friend—top it off with a rain shell to stay dry when sudden showers roll in.

Protect Against Wet Terrain
Upper Michigan trails often pass through wetlands, mossy ground, or areas with standing water. Waterproof boots (not just sneakers) will keep your feet dry and give you good ankle support when navigating rocky or uneven paths.

Bug Defense is a Must
Mosquitoes and black flies love the thick forests. Pack insect repellent and consider a head net if you’re hiking in peak bug season. A long-sleeve shirt and pants can also help keep the bite count down.

Stay Hydrated
Even on cooler days, hiking burns through your water fast. Carry more than you think you’ll need, especially on longer hikes where streams might not be safe to filter from.

Know Your Trail
Cell service can be spotty in the backcountry. Download offline trail maps or carry a printed map and compass before heading out. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.

Respect the Wetlands
Stick to marked trails and boardwalks when crossing swampy or sensitive areas. It protects the ecosystem and saves you from muddy boots.

Be Wildlife Wise
You may encounter deer, porcupines, or even moose. Keep a respectful distance, never feed wildlife, and remember: you’re a guest in their home.

Pack the Essentials
A small first-aid kit, flashlight, and extra snacks can turn a rough hike into a manageable adventure. In Upper Michigan’s remote areas, being prepared is part of the fun.

Leave No Trace
Carry out everything you bring in, stay on trails, and keep our wild spaces pristine for future hikers.

Savor the Silence
One of the greatest gifts of hiking in the U.P. is the quiet. Take a moment to pause, listen to the wind through the pines, and breathe in the clean air—it’s why we call this place wild.
