WHERE TO HUNT
MI-HUNT
Mi-HUNT is your go-to map for finding places to hunt across Michigan. It shows both public lands and private properties that welcome hunters, giving you an easy way to see where you can go. You’ll also find up-to-date info on habitat types, nearby trails, and even other recreation spots to help you plan a great day outdoors.
Grouse Enhanced Management Sites (GEMS)
Michigan’s Grouse Enhanced Management Sites (GEMS) are some of the best spots to experience upland bird hunting. These areas feature walking trails that make it easier for newcomers and those who prefer a more accessible hunt to get out and enjoy the outdoors. Each site includes convenient parking and posted details about the local area to help you make the most of your trip.
Hunting Access Program (HAP)
The Hunting Access Program (HAP) started back in 1977 to open more hunting opportunities in southern Michigan, where most land is privately owned. Since then, it has grown to include areas in the northeast Lower Peninsula and parts of the eastern Upper Peninsula. Today, HAP stands as one of the longest-running programs in the country that gives the public access to private lands for hunting.
Wetland Wonders
Michigan’s Wetland Wonders are specially managed areas that offer some of the best waterfowl hunting in the state. While they’re funded through hunting and access fees, these sites aren’t just for hunters — they’re open most of the year for anyone to explore, enjoy, and experience the beauty of Michigan’s wetlands.
State Game Areas
Across Michigan, a network of publicly owned lands is carefully managed to support wildlife habitat, hunting, and wildlife viewing. The system includes over 100 game and wildlife areas, together spanning more than 340,000 acres.

HUNTING TIPS
Know the Terrain
Upper Michigan is filled with thick forests, wetlands, and rocky ridges. Study maps and scout your hunting area in advance so you’re not caught off guard.
Prepare for Changing Weather
Conditions can shift quickly, from sunny to cold rain or even snow in the next moment. Dress in layers, and always carry rain gear.
Wear Blaze Orange (as required)
Safety first. Make sure you’re visible to other hunters by wearing hunter orange on your hat and clothing, especially during firearm season.
Check Local Regulations
Each county and management area can have different rules. Review the latest Michigan DNR hunting guide so you’re hunting legally and responsibly.
Respect Private and Public Lands
Use Mi-HUNT or local maps to know where you can hunt. Always get permission before stepping onto private property.
Travel Light but Smart
Pack essentials like a compass or GPS, headlamp, knife, water, and snacks. Upper Michigan’s wilderness can be remote, so plan as if you may be out longer than expected.
Watch the Wind
Wildlife in the U.P. relies heavily on scent. Pay attention to wind direction to improve your chances and avoid spooking game.
Leave No Trace
Carry out what you carry in. Respect the land and wildlife so it stays wild for generations to come.
Stay Connected & Safe
Cell service can be spotty. Let someone know where you’ll be and when you plan to return. A two-way radio or GPS communicator is a smart backup.
Enjoy the Experience
Hunting in Upper Michigan is about more than just the harvest. Take in the quiet forests, crisp air, and the beauty of the north woods — that’s what makes the U.P. so special.
