WHERE TO BOAT
Inland Lakes
Forsyth Township’s inland lakes are pure U.P. magic, clean, clear waters surrounded by tall pines, cozy cabins, and peaceful shorelines. With several public boat launches, it’s easy to drop in your kayak, paddleboard, or whatever watercraft you love. These spring-fed northern lakes are made for lazy summer afternoons, quiet paddles at sunrise, and endless memory-making. Spend a little time on the water here, and you’ll quickly see why people fall in love with the heart of Upper Michigan.
Escanaba River
Flowing right through downtown Gwinn, the Escanaba River is one of the area’s best-kept paddling secrets. With a designated kayak launch ready to go, it’s easy to slip into the river’s sparkling tea-colored water — a natural tint from the cedar trees that line its banks. The gentle current winds you through peaceful forest, with just a few playful Class I rapids to keep things fun (and still friendly for beginners). Along the way, keep your eyes open for eagles soaring above, deer along the shore, and plenty of waterfowl. A float down the Escanaba is the perfect way to spend a few hours soaking up the quiet beauty of Upper Michigan.
Lake Superior
Nothing compares to a day out on Lake Superior — the largest, clearest, and most breathtaking of the Great Lakes. With public boat launches waiting for you in nearby Marquette, it’s easy to set off on an adventure across its deep blue waters. Boaters love cruising along the scenic shoreline, while paddlers can take in the lake’s beauty by sea kayak (the best choice for Superior’s big water). Whether you’re out for a relaxing ride or chasing a little adventure, Lake Superior is the perfect backdrop for making unforgettable memories in the U.P.
BOATING TIPS
Biking in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is pure adventure—but a little prep makes it even better. Choose trails that fit your crew’s energy level, starting with smooth gravel or wide, easy paths. Do a quick bike check—tires, brakes, and chains—so no one’s stuck walking. Helmets are non-negotiable, and gloves or pads keep things comfortable on rugged UP terrain. Stay fueled with water, snacks, and sunscreen, and keep rides fun with games or trail “treasure hunts.” Remember trail etiquette: yield to uphill riders, respect hikers, and never cut switchbacks. Most of all—make memories. Let kids pick the route, snap photos by lakes or waterfalls, and soak in the wild beauty that makes biking Upper Michigan unforgettable.
